Erbium and Nd:YAG Lasers

Erbium lasers can be used for a host of dental procedures. They are both hard and soft tissue capable and allow for more dental procedures to be done without local anesthesia. Erbium lasers also have a significant disinfecting effect on the dentin and enamel to be restored. When used for hard tissue situations like bone cutting, there is minimal thermal and mechanical trauma to adjacent tissues and these procedures show an excellent healing response. Soft tissue applications with Erbium lasers have rapid healing times with minimal postoperative pain.

The Nd:YAG laser wavelength is absorbed by pigment in the tissue. Nd:YAG lasers are primarily used for periodontal treatments. They are often used for debridement and disinfection of periodontal pockets. These lasers are able to stimulate fibrin formation allowing them to seal treated pockets. Nd:YAG lasers can also be used for many other soft tissue procedures including gingivectomy, frenectomy, impression toughing and biopsy.
